Early History
Bayfront opened its doors to the community in 1906 as the 15-bed St. Petersburg Sanitarium, the first hospital in the small town of St. Petersburg, Florida. Over the next several decades, the hospital underwent many changes in name and location.

By the 1950s, the hospital, then known as Mound Park, was a busy place with every bed full in the winter; the result of a huge influx of tourists who came each year to enjoy Florida's warm tropical weather and sunshine.

A New Era
The decade of the '60s saw more changes for the hospital. In 1968, the city contracted with a private organization and the former public hospital - Mound Park - was reborn as not-for-profit Bayfront Medical Center.

Present Day
Today, Bayfront Medical Center remains true to its original mission as a socially responsible healthcare provider. The hospital is the largest charity care provider in Pinellas County and has developed a national reputation for medical excellence.

Awards & Recognition
The Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations places Bayfront in the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide. The American Nurses Credentialing Center named Bayfront one of only 30 "magnet" hospitals in the country in 2001. And, for eight years, Working Mother Magazine recognized the hospital as one of the 100 best employers nationwide
