Karen A. Raimer, M.D.
Program DirectorDr. Karen Raimer is the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program and Assistant Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Dr. Raimer is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and received her medical training at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. After a four-year residency program at the Alton Ochsner Foundation Hospital, she served as Clinical Professor at Louisiana State University in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was then awarded a two year fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Raimer is active in resident teaching with special interest in diabetes, ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis. She is currently an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Raimer is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Marilyn Fudge, M.D.
Assistant Program DirectorDr. Fudge is a native Floridian, born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Fudge graduated from the University of Florida in 1990 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology. She subsequently attended the University of Florida College of Medicine and graduated in 1998 with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. In 2002 she completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Bayfront Medical Center where she received numerous awards. She was honored as outstanding resident of the year in her intern and chief years.
After residency, Dr. Fudge spent three years in private practice in St.Petersburg. From 2005-2012, she served as the Assistant Director of Women’s Services at Community Health Centers of Pinellas, Inc., a not-for-profit health organization. During this time, she was also a part-time faculty member supervising resident physicians on labor and delivery. Dr. Fudge became a full-time faculty member in April 2012 and accepted the position of Assistant Program Director for the OB-GYN residency. Dr. Fudge received a Master Degree in Health Administration in May 2012 from the University of South Florida College of Public Health.
Dr. Fudge is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics-Gynecology and a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics-Gynecology. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is currently an examiner for the American Board of OB-GYN. Her interests include obstetrics, office gynecology and benign gyn surgery.
Frank B. Marsalisi, M.D.
Director, GynecologyDr. Frank Marsalisi is the Director of Gynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders. Originally from New York, he preceded his medical degree from Michigan State University with two years of hypersensitivity diseases research. After completing his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of South Florida, he went on to fulfill his four-year commitment with the National Health Service Corp as Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ruskin Migrant Community Health Center. At Ruskin, he was made a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida. Dr. Marsalisi is responsible for supervising the residents' gynecology clinic, surgical experience and teaching in urodynamics. Dr. Marsalisi is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
James P. LaPolla, M.D.
Director of Gynecological OncologyDr. James P. LaPolla, Director of Gynecological Oncology received his degree in medicine from the University of Illinois. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine, Dr. LaPolla completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Los Angeles County, USC Medical Center where he subsequently completed a fellowship in Gynecological Oncology. Dr. LaPolla is board certified in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is subspecialty certified in Gynecological Oncology. From 1991-1998, Dr. LaPolla served as the residency director at Bayfront Medical Center, and was previously an associate professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecological Oncology.
José A. Prieto, M.D.
Resident Research CoordinatorDr. Prieto completed his B.S. in Biology, Masters in Public Health, and received his medical degree at the University of Miami in 1990. Dr. Prieto completed his residency program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston-LBJ General Hospital, where he received the honor of Outstanding Chief Resident his final year. Dr. Prieto completed his fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science. Dr. Prieto is Assistant Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine with the Bayfront Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program and is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine. His areas of interest include ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis. Dr. Prieto is the current coordinator for resident research. Current medical student clerkship obstetrical coordinator.
Robert O. Chamberlin, M.D.
Director, Ambulatory Medicine and Primary CareDr. Chamberlin received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1982. He subsequently completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bayfront Medical Center in 1986, and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Chamberlin teaches general obstetrics and gynecology, is the coordinator for primary care, and supervises the gynecology clinic, mid-risk obstetric clinic and gynecologic surgery. He is currently a reviewer for the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology. Current medical student clerkship gynecological coordinator.
David Desper, M.D.
Assistant Medical DirectorDr. David Desper was born and raised in St. Louis Missouri. He received his Undergraduate Degree and Medical Degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Barnes Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis in 1981.
Dr Desper opened his practice in St. Petersburg in 1981, and has been teaching residents at Bayfront for over 30 years. After spending 23 years in private practice, Dr. Desper became a full-time faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency Program at Morton Plant Hospital.
In April 2012, Dr. Desper returned to Bayfront as a full time faculty member. He is board certified
In Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a NAMS Certified Menopausal Practitioner(NCMP). His interests include obstetrics, office
gynecology, benign gyn surgery, colposcopy, vulvar disease and menopausal medicine. He supervises the residents on L&D, the mid-risk OB Clinic, the postpartum clinic and in the OR on both major and minor gyn cases. He is a Fellow in ACOG, in addition to membership in the North American Menopause Society ( NAMS) and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP). Dr. Desper has been recognized six times in his career for his teaching accomplishments.
Edward A. Zbella, M.D.
Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and InfertilityDr. Zbella completed his medical degree in 1980 at the University of Illinois. In 1984, he completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Chicago. Subsequently at Michael Reese Hospital, he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Zbella is a Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and serves as the Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Bayfront Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. Dr. Zbella has a special interest in operative laparoscopy and assisted reproductive techniques. He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals and several chapters in medical textbooks. Dr. Zbella is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida and serves as an instructor at numerous postgraduate courses in this area.
Megan Indermaur, M.D.
Associate Director, Gyn OncologyBoard Certified Gynecologic Oncologist
Dr. Indermaur graduated from the University of California, Santa Barabara with a Bachelor of Science in the study of Aquatic Biology, 1998. Attended Saint Louis University, School of Medicine where she obtained her doctorate of Medicine in 2002. Megan continued on to complete her 4-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida where she continued on to a 3-year Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at USF and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Center. Dr. Indermaur is a Board Certified diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and subspecialty board certification in Gynecologic Oncology.
Dr. Indermaur joined Women's Cancer Associates in 2009 and has been working with the residency program since then. She is trained and specializes in minimally invasive surgery, both traditional laparoscopy and daVinci robotic surgery, for most gynecological cancers and benign, difficult pelvic surgery. She also focuses on personalized surgical care and chemotherapy for ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancer.
Andrew Helfgott, M.D.
Associate Director, PerinatologyDr. Helfgott completed his medical education at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadelajara, Mexico and at Queens Hospital-Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center, SUNY-Stony Brook. Following a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at The Brooklyn Hospital-Caledonian Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, he completed a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He earned a master's degree in Health Policy and Administration from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. From 2005 through June 2011, Dr. Helfgott was Professor and Chief of the Section of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Helfgott also served as Medical Director of the Regional Perinatal Center at the Medical College of Georgia. He held previous faculty appointments at the Florida State University School of Medicine, the University of Florida College of Medicine-Pensacola, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he also was an assistant professor in the School of Public Health.
A recognized authority on the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in pregnancy, Dr. Helfgott has served in Florida and Georgia on state committees for the prevention of perinatal transmission of HIV. He was recently appointed as a faculty member of the Florida and Caribbean Aids Education and Training Center at the University of South Florida Center for HIV Education and Research. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine and also chairs the Society's Coding Committee. He has served as course director for the Society's Ultrasound Scientific Forum as well as for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine's Obstetrical Film Panel. Dr Helfgott has been appointed to the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology Committee on Coding and Nomenclature for a three year term ( 2011-2014). Dr. Helfgott's special interests include outcomes for high-risk mothers and their babies, infectious diseases in pregnancy and preterm labor.
Mark D. Sanchez, M.D.
Chairman, Dept. of Ob/Gyn, Associate Director, REIDr. Sanchez graduated from the University of South Florida in 1991 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. He subsequently attended the University of Florida College of Medicine, and graduated in 1995 with a Doctorate in Medicine. From 1995 to 1999 Dr. Sanchez performed his Internship and Residency at Bayfront Medical Center where he received several honors and awards including outstanding laparoscopic surgeon. Following his residency, Dr. Sanchez completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of South Florida where he presently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor.
He is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, and the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists. Special interests include: diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, Müllerian anomalies and estrogen receptor physiology. Dr. Sanchez is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialty certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
