Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine
The foundation of our Obstetrics and Gynecology residency is to provide state-of-the-art care for our community. With more than 3,600 deliveries each year, Bayfront Medical Center is a premier childbirth center in our region. Bayfront is one of only ten regional Level III Perinatal Intensive Care Centers in Florida, and also provides a Maternal Fetal Medicine program and Level II nursery as well as a Level III nursery with neighboring All Children's Hospital. Our facilities and programs allow us to serve numerous high-risk obstetrical patients, and our Bayflite helicopter transport team has expanded our area of service throughout the region and state.

In addition to providing routine and high-risk care, Bayfront residents and faculty provide services for community health centers, two obstetrical high-risk clinics, low and moderate risk clinics and ultrasound clinics. Residents will develop their skills with high-risk obstetrical transports, and in Bayfront's active antepartum, labor and delivery, and recovery units.

At Bayfront, routine and high-risk obstetrics are taught through academic understanding and practical hands-on experience. Residents work closely with our dedicated team of board-certified obstetricians and gynecologists and board-certified maternal fetal medicine specialists. Bayfront's maternal-fetal medicine service includes prenatal diagnosis with the use of amniocentesis, chorionic villi sampling and ultrasonographical assessment of fetal anomalies. Residents on this demanding service experience a wide range of cases, and will come away fully prepared to meet any challenge of obstetrical medicine.

Gynecology
Residents have ample opportunities to learn and develop gynecological skills at Bayfront Medical Center. Several clinics per week are scheduled for office gynecology, in which diagnostic procedures such as colposcopy, urodynamics and saline sonohysterography are taught. Residents have numerous opportunities for surgery in new operating suites, including hysterectomy, advanced laparoscopy, vaginal reconstruction, and various anti-incontinence procedures.

Department directors and faculty oversee the residents' gynecologic outpatient clinics, surgeries and urogynecology experience. Time is provided for residents to assist community attending physicians with their gynecologic surgery cases.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Residents spend two months during their second and third years on the endocrinology and infertility service. During this rotation, residents gain experience in infertility evaluation and outpatient skills, as well as extensive training in operative and diagnostic laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and in vitro fertilization (IVF). In addition, the endocrinology and infertility service sponsors a didactic lecture series, which is offered two times per month.

Oncology
Residents rotate onto the gynecologic oncology service at Bayfront Medical Center in their third, and fourth years. Each week, residents will have three half-day clinics to see new or returning outpatients, and two days of oncology surgery. All patients are presented at a weekly gynecologic oncology multidisciplinary teaching conference. While on the oncology service, third year residents attend the weekly breast and colposcopy clinic, under the supervision of faculty and board certified physicians. Residents will also participate in breast surgery cases from that clinic. Residents will learn how to diagnose and manage the full array of pre-neoplastic and neoplastic disease occurring in adult females.

Academics
The faculty at Bayfront Medical Center is dedicated to providing an academic atmosphere for this residency. 10-15 hours per week of mandatory didactic lectures are given by board certified physicians in their respective disciplines. These lectures include daily morning teaching rounds, weekly conferences in pathology, maternal-fetal medicine, endocrinology and infertility, basic sciences, and gynecologic oncology. Additionally, monthly journal clubs and monthly lectures, prepared by residents, are given.

In order to expand our residents' fund of knowledge, they are required to participate in a research project during their second and third years. At the end of the academic year, residents present the results of their research project at the annual Resident Research Day.

In addition to their obstetrics and gynecology rotations, first year residents spend one month on the SICU service with the trauma surgeons, and one month of ambulatory care and one month in medicine with internal medicine physicians.

During the second, third, and fourth years, residents have a formal ultrasonography rotation. During this time they will perform numerous obstetric and gynecological ultrasounds, amniocentesis and vaginal probe ultrasound under the direction of faculty and board-certified perinatalogists.
